As an example of our work, this is an outline of a restoration project done for Richard Denton and Nikki Stockley.
San Cristoforo was a dilapidated farmhouse and tobacco tower which hadn't been lived in for years. The original thought was to renovate the roof and redo apertures and windows but of course it turned out to be much more than that. On closer inspection it transpired that the foundations were shaky, the brickwork unstable and all the existing roof joints and internal beams had been made out of recycled materials taken from a defunct railway line. In those days in Umbria (after the war), there was tremendous poverty, building materials were scarce and anything that could be salvaged to create and restore habitations and ruins was utilised.
In the end we had to completely rebuild the roof and most of the structure of the building using strong, sympathetic and traditional materials. New foundations were installed complete with damp proofing and the stone and brick building was restored to a condition both structurally sounder and aesthetically better than before. The building is now faithful to the original but in much better condition! Windows, French windows and doors have been installed and enlarged to open up the light, making the house attractive to live in during both summer and winter months. It can be luminous inside or gently shuttered, according to the seasons. Underfloor central heating has been installed, a wonderful stone fireplace (salvaged from the original structure) and lovely terra-cotta floors laid in a traditional manner. It's really a blend of the best of old and new and much loved by the owners.
